Phichit is also the setting of the famous Thai literature work named "Crocodile Krai Thong'" written and composed by King Rama II in the ancient Sukhothai era. In older days. Phichit was called Muang Sa Luang or Royal Pond City, later on in the Ayutthaya era, it was called Okaburi meaning the city of the riverbed, as the two main rivers in the northern region of Thailand, the Yom river and the Nan river, both run through this historic City.
Getting around the Town of Phichit
One of the reasons to visit Phichit is to see the past glory of the historic Siam kingdom (Thailand), namely the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya era's. The Old City Park of Phichit witnesses many historic remains and ruins such as the City Wall, the City Moat, many historic stupas and the Arboretum.
Located in the heart of the Old City is the temple of Wat Mahathat, built entirely in bricks with a Lanka style Stupa. In and around the Wat Mahathat temple you will find many archaic objects and ancient remains from the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya eras in Thailand.
Some other ancient Thai temples that are worth visiting include the Wat Tha Luang temple, with a very beautiful bronze Chiang Saen style Buddha Image. Further worth visiting are the Wat Rong Chang temple, the Wat Nakhonchum temple and the Wat Hua Dong temple. all are very important in terms of Thai history, literature and ancient architecture of Thailand.
