This year Thailand is hosting the Asia Pacific Economic Conference or Apec 2003. Apec meetings and events will be held from February to October 2003 in various provinces of Thailand. Major meetings include the Apec Tourism Working Group in the month of April in Pattaya, the Apec Senior Officials Meeting in the months of February, May, and August in Chiang Rai , Khon Kan, and Bangkok, the Apec Finance Ministers Meeting in month of September in Phuket and lastly the Apec Economic Leaders' Meeting from 14 to 21 October in Bangkok.
Expecting more than 10,000 participants in to APEC 2003, Thailand has considered this event a good opportunity to promote tourism. Thailand has planned to organize several cultural activities to welcome the Apec delegates and participants to the meeting, such as the royal barge procession at night along the Chao Praya River on October 20 and a traditional Thai cuisine banquet at the Bangkok Noi Railway Station in Thailand plus a traditional Thai Loy Kratong demonstration.
On the day of October 20, the general public is welcome to enjoy the grandeur of Thailand's Royal Barge Procession, which will sail past the Grand Palace and Wat Pra Kaew Temple and many other places along the Chao Praya River in Bangkok such as governmental offices and riverside hotels. This is the first time that the Royal Barge Procession will sail at night.
