Mandalay International Airport in Myanmar is situated in the middle of nowhere, some 50km (36miles) from the center of Mandalay. The brand new high-tech airport, build in the year 2000 at a cost of US$150 million, capable of handling 8,000 passengers a day, and boasting one of the longest runways in SE-Asia with a length of 4267 meter, capable of receiving the largest aircrafts in the world. But due to Myanmar's political condition, the airport slumbers in near darkness with all air conditioning turned off, only receiving a handful of small daily flights. Government licensed non air-conditioned taxis are available outside the arrival hall of Mandalay airport, but fares need to be negotiated for the one and half hour drive to the city. If pre-booked, then airport pick-up by Mandalay hotels in air conditioned cars is strongly advised. At the time of writing (2005), no passenger services or facilities seem to be operating at Mandalay International Airport, other than a government owned currency exchange boot.
