Hill Tribes of the Golden Triangle The Hmong Hill Tribe or Meo Hilltribe in Thailand | Hmong sisters (Blue Hmong) Thailand Numbering about 80,000, the Hmong hilltribe are Thailand's second largest hill tribe in the Golden Triangle around Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai. The Thais call them the "Meo", a deprecating word that means barbarian in Thai language. The Hmong are the latest arrivals in Thailand among the hill tribes. Most Hmong migrated into Thailand in the 1950s & 1960s, escaping civil war in Laos. The Hmong are divided in 2 main sub hilltribes, "Blue Hmong" & "White Hmong". West of Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai, we mostly find Blue Hmong hill tribes, to the east of Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai we only find White Hmong hill tribes. Originally the Hmong people lived in great numbers in the icy regions of Tibet & Mongolia. Later Hmong migrations, due to social unrest and war brought them to Western China and from there to Laos, Vietnam and Thailand. The Hmong hill tribe minority in Thailand are a fiercely independent people, who take orders from no one, nevertheless, they helped the Americans during the Vietnam War conflict. | Hmong Opium Pipe Smoker Thailand There are an estimated 12 different Hmong hill tribe clans in Thailand, with the majority belonging to the "Blue Hmong" hilltribes and the "White Hmong" hilltribe. Blue Hmong women can be identified by their deep blue, pleated costumes and their hair worn in large buns. Blue Hmong men wear baggy black pants and embodied jackets, closing over the chest with a button at the left shoulder. White Hmong women wear hemp skirts or black baggy trousers and simple jackets with blue cuffs. Some White Hmong groups wear black or dark blue caps. The Clothes of the Hmong are made out of self cultivated hemp. After it is woven the textile is dyed and pressed to get a special sheen. Their outfit includes wide frilled skirts, high leggings, silver chains and silver jewelry. Villages of the Hmong hill tribe people in Thailand, are usually at high altitudes, just below the pinnacle of a hill. Their houses have a dirt floor with the roof nearly extending to the ground. The Hmong live in extended families, in two or more rooms of the house. Every house includes a large guest platform. | Hmong girl singing at a ceremony Before marriage, promiscuity amongst the young Hmong people is accepted and marriage is followed by a trial period before the bride price is paid. In Hmong society, men are expected to do most of the work, but nowadays they work very little and expect to be supported by their wives. The Hmong hill tribes, traditionally grow opium and drug addiction to opium in some hill tribe villages is very high, mainly among the Hmong men in Thailand. Nearly all Hmong hill tribe people are strict animists, whose shamans sometimes use very dramatic methods to contact the spirits. |
