Si Satchanalai Gold From Thailand

In the days of Siam (ancient Thailand), the craftsmanship and beauty of Thong Sri Satchanalai woven gold made that Sukhothai had the reputation of manufacturing the most beautiful golden ornaments in the world and was at some point the most important producer of golden jewelry and ornaments in Asia.

100% pure gold was melted and then carefully pulled in to very thin golden threads, used to create magnificent masterpieces. Each unique piece of art consisted out of 300 to 1000 shiny golden strings, woven together and strengthen with hidden melted knots. The uniqueness of the Sri Satchanalai gold and the goldsmith's from Sukhothai was legendary around the whole ancient world.

Nowadays, the gold craftsmen from Thailand still design and manufacture Si Satchanalai gold, with the same refinement and craftsmanship as in the days of ancient Thailand. Today, Si Satchanalai gold does not represent ancient gold ornaments, but is the modern work by goldsmith's from the Si Satchanalai District of Sukhothai Province in Thailand.

Thailand's Si Satchanalai gold is highly prized and those who collect and preserve accessories made from Si Satchanalai gold are very aware of its uniqueness. Local Thai craftsmen have created striking designs using the Si Satchanalai gold technique, with an emphasis on novelty combined with ancient artistic patterns.

Jewelry designs include stucco reproductions from historical Sukhothai sites, gables copied from Thailand's ancient temples plus fine designs, as found on ancient pottery from the Sangkhalok period.

Using the techniques from the Sri Satchanalai goldsmith's, allow the modern Thailand craftsman to create unique gold accessories in black lacquer, such as bracelets, necklaces, handbags, and belts.

Lacquered gold was introduced in Thailand in the Ayutthaya Period and was produced by adding red, blue or green coloring powder to the gold in a secret mixture, so that the lacquer and the gold would harmonize. The most difficult part in manufacturing Si Satchanalai gold is producing the carved design which requires very special accuracy and refinement by Thai craftsmen.

With its modern forms in attractive colors, the various patterns inspired by the earlier Thai civilization and Thai legends together with intricate carved designs, modern Si Satchanalai gold jewelry and ornaments are a valuable handicraft, reflecting the excellent craftsmanship of Thailand, that is very difficult for others to emulate.
