A total of 672 skydivers from 42 different countries, jumping from six Thai military aircrafts over the Thailand's capital Bangkok have set a new world record today for a mass skydiving free fall, at least three of the jumpers were injured during the jump.

The previous record of 572 parachutists for a mass jump had also been set in Bangkok in 1999.

An unpredictable wind blew several skydivers off the landing zone near Bangkok's Grand Palace in Thailand, and reporters saw at least 3 skydivers taken away to a hospital with injuries. None was believed life-threatening.

The group, collectively known as "World Team," jumped out of six C-130 military transport planes from Thailand's air force at a height of 2135 meters, then floated down to Sanam Luang Park, or Royal Field, located opposite the Grand Palace in Bangkok Thailand.

Some of the skydivers encountered problems as they neared the ground, with several members of the team landing on trees at the edge of the field, and at least one skydiver hitting the roof of a nearby university building. Another skydiver suffered a suspected broken leg.

Karina Willerup, the team's spokeswoman said the skydivers came from 42 nations and included 250 parachutists from Thailand's armed forces. All members of the skydiving team were described as among the world's skydiving elite.

The event in Thailand, apart from setting a new record, was staged to honor Thailand's Queen Sirikit, who this year is celebrating her 72nd birthday, an auspicious milestone for Thai Buddhists since it marks the sixth 12-year-cycle of life. The number of parachutists, 672, was chosen to represent this milestone.
