Thailand's fiery hot chillies, a most vital ingredient in the Thai kingdom's renowned cuisine, have reportedly become the latest casualty of the bird flu outbreak in Thailand as farmers are running out of the chicken-manure needed to grow them.

Hundreds of chilli farmers in Hua Rua district of northeastern Ubon Ratchathani province in Thailand are in crisis due to a lack of manure to fertilize their chilli crops, the Bangkok Post reported Thursday.

"We can't use chemicals or other organic fertilizers. It must be chicken manure," Chantai Khamdee, a chilli grower in the Hua Rua district famed for its red hot chillies told the reporters.

Chilli farmers in Thailand were using their remaining stockpiles of chicken-manure carefully because they could not be sure of getting their hands on any fresh supplies, he said.

As part of emergency measures introduced after the deadly H5N1 virus was detected in Thailand last Friday, all poultry products and chicken-droppings are banned from being transported within a 50-kilometre radius of the with Bird-Flu infected areas.

Chicken manure trader Nongkan Orn said her supplies were disappearing fast. "Now we're selling what's left in our stockpiles and they're running out," she was quoted as saying.

Chillies are used in the vast majority of Thailand's famed food dishes, such as Tom Yam Kung, a spicy prawn soup and Larb Neua, a mouth-tingling salad of beef with fresh herbs and red hot chillies.
