Thailand is safe for tourists
07 Feb 2004
Welcome to the culture of Thailand

Thailand is "Very Safe for Travelers", says the head of the "World Health Organization" (WHO). No need to cancel trips to Thailand.

Thailand is still very safe for tourists and travelers said Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). "We were happy to hear earlier this week that "Lee Jong Wook", Director General of the WHO (World Health Organization), took the effort to announce publicly that there is absolutely no need for travelers to cancel trips to Thailand, because of concerns the Bird Flu."

Director General of the WHO, Lee Jong Wook made this comments this week in Brussels, saying that steering clear of chicken farms and open poultry markets in Thailand is more than enough to avoid any danger for tourists to Thailand.

TAT Governor Siriwan also reported that the German tourist with a suspicious fever is now in good condition and recovering in Germany. The "Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Germany" has concluded that the German tourist was not suffering from the Bird Flu disease, as the international media first speculated.

The Governor of the TAT also noted that Thailand is maintaining its busy schedule of international events and festivals. The Bangkok International Film Festival concluded last week with visits from major international stars and directors, including Oliver Stone. The Johnny Walker Classic Golf Tournament wrapped up last week with a victory for Miguel Angel Jimenez and drew players and audiences from around the world. We are now getting ready for the "Pattaya Music Festival" with the arrival in March of more than 200 International Musicians and Music Groups.

TAT Governor Siriwan added further: "Thailand is continuing to take the Bird Flu or Avian Flu very seriously, our Prime Minister has deployed teams of doctors throughout the country monitoring the situation and is taking very tough measures to contain any further spread of the virus, in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization.

Resort and hotel management all over Thailand have taken extra steps to follow the World Health Organization cooking guidelines to protect tourists and travelers from any eventual exposure to undercooked poultry products.

Siriwan concluded that the quick response of Thailand's catering and hotel industry over the past weeks shows the commitment of Thailand's tourism industry to insure the safety of the millions of tourists who come to Thailand to enjoy the vibrant Thai culture, the beauty of the beaches and the unparalleled historical sites of ancient Siam.
