The Thai government is currently giving away tons of chicken-meat and millions of eggs to reassure people it is safe to eat the products from non-infected farms after an outbreak of bird flu hit Thailand very badly and claimed 6 lives in the country.
Hundreds of thousands watched in Sanam Luang park, just across the Royal Grand Palace in Bangkok, as Thaksin Shinawatra himself took command of an army of cooks to prepare the words biggest ever Thai-style chicken curry and went on with cooking many other chicken and egg dishes in the capital of Bangkok in Thailand.
His aim, he told reporters before, was to show the world that the Thai people have confidence in home-reared chicken from non-infected areas in Thailand. World Health Experts even say that eating chicken meat and eggs from infected birds is safe providing the products are thoroughly cooked. But many people in Thailand were avoiding to eat chicken and eggs because of the many confusing and wild stories in the media.
"I don't care if the people of Thailand love or hate me, but I am inviting the Thais to come and show they love their country, Thailand," the Prime Minister said in his weekly radio address to the nation. "If you don't eat chicken, other Thai people can't sell their healthy chickens, and they will lose their jobs. Then everyone in Thailand will start having problems.", Thaksin said.
The response to Thaksin's demand of "Love Thailand and come and eat chicken with me" was overwhelming, not Tens but Hundreds of thousands of Thais, from all social classes, came to Sanam Luang park to show their support for the Thai Kingdom and Prime Minister Thaksin at the first ever National Chicken Feast in Thailand.
The event is part of the Thai government's on-going efforts nationwide to restore confidence in the Thailand's poultry products as local consumption of chicken has plummeted more than 90% since the Bird Flu or Avian Influenza hit Thailand weeks ago.
This large turnout of people was a surprise even for the Prime Minister and the organizing officials with the number of Thais, showing up to Premier Thaksin's invitation, more than ten times what the organizers had expected.
During the Chicken feast today, several hundred private sector and government booths were giving away more than 30,000 kilogram's of cooked chicken-dishes along with hundreds of thousands of eggs. Every Thai dishes imaginable was made with chicken-meat and eggs.
Prime Minister Thaksin and his army of cooks also broke a world record by making the largest ever pot of stew, which was a Thai-style 5-spice chicken & egg stew (curry) by using 10,000 boiled eggs and 30,000 chicken wings.
Aside from the free food being offered at the fair, the country's entertainment industry lended a hand by organizing concerts featuring famous Thai stars with the climax the "Eat Thai Chicken" extravaganza a concert by pop-star Thongchai McIntyre, whose nickname is "Bird".
