The ruling Thai Rak Thai Party in Thailand secured an overwhelming majority in the general election of 6 February, giving Thaksin Shinawatra an unprecedented second term as Prime Minister of Thailand.
The landslide victory of last Sunday marks the first time ever in the history of Thailand that a single political party has captured the majority of parliamentary seats in a free election.
The win of the Thai Rak Thai party, which even exceeds Thaksin Shinawatra's goal to seek 350 seats in the parliament, also enables him to become the Thailand's first civilian elected Prime Minister to serve out his full four-year term.
Opposition leader Banyat Bantadtan quickly conceded his defeat after the first voting results came in. He said: I was shocked when I saw the results, however we have to accept the election results since it's the mandate of the people of Thailand.
